Brush Fire Off Saw Mill Parkway Takes Hours To Contain

A multi-acre brush fire that broke out Saturday afternoon off of the Saw Mill River Parkway in Chappaqua took nearly four hours to contain.

Nearly a dozen local fire departments joined the Chappaqua Fire Department in responding after the blaze broke out at around 3 p.m. in the area on the hillside along the parkway behind Spring Lane.

Millwood FD Tanker 15 responded with Bedford Hills Fire Department Tanker 5 and Somers Volunteer Fire Department Tanker 16 to supply water to attack the growing brush fire from the highway. 

Thirty minutes later, Millwood FD Engine 247 was requested to respond to assist with extinguishment operations from the top of the hill and to protect potential exposure structures.

Responding fire departments included Chappaqua, Millwood, Bedford Hills, Somers, Armonk, Thornwood, Hawthorne, Pleasantville, Katonah, Briarcliff Manor and Mount Kisco Fire Department and a helicopter with a bambi bucket from Westchester County Police Department.
